Three MAPgroup photographers, Andrew Chapman, Jaime Murcia and Noel Butcher journeyed to Camperdown in Victoria’s western district in January 2013 to capture the colour and action of the Camperdown Cup, a once a year race meeting held in front of the magnificent 110 year old grandstand that had been slated for demolition. The locals banded together to save their historic grandstand and its restoration is well underway. Restoring grandstands is an expensive business and more funds are needed – which is where this book comes in.
Planned as a fund-raiser for the restoration, ‘Camperdown and its Cup’ is a 28cm x 21cm hardcover book of nearly 200 pages filled with more than 200 photographs that captures the colour, the spirit, and the thrill of the day at this unique racing event. Conceived by Melbourne medicos John Daffy and Adam Testro, all proceeds from this book will aid in the completion of the grandstand restoration so that future generations can once again enjoy this truly authentic country racing experience. With words by Adam McNicol and design by Phil Campbell, it’s not a book about horse racing but a great book about a great day.
